Village At War
Village at War
Now in its 26th year, this ever-popular two-day event brings the sights, sounds, and smells of 1944 Britain to the Rural Life Living Museum. Take a journey back in time to experience life in a small southern English village as troops prepared for the historic D-Day landings in France.
Discover how daily life carried on amid rationing and air raids, and watch as American and British troops train, interact with villagers, and prepare for battle. Enjoy the music of bands, the energy of jive dancing, the bustle of the NAAFI, and so much more.
High-ranking officers and VIPs will be inspecting the troops and visiting the RAF plotting room.
Join us for this unforgettable experience, described by re-enactors as "one of, if not the best, World War Two events of the year." In past years, over 300 re-enactors have set up camp around the Museum, recreating the atmosphere of a village on the eve of D-Day.
A Day Out for the Whole Family
Village at War is perfect for families, history enthusiasts, and anyone curious about this pivotal time in history. The Museum grounds will be filled with authentic period encampments, costumed re-enactors, vintage equipment, and military vehicles. Throughout the day, demonstrations and immersive "incidents" take place — including a dramatic air raid!
Relax and Refuel
Bring a picnic and enjoy our covered picnic area, or find a shady spot among the trees — just be ready to share your lunch with the local GIs! The Market Garden Café will be serving a wide selection of hot and cold food and drinks.
To purchase tickets for this event then go to our "Buy Tickets" section at the top of the website and go to events.
Please Note:
During the air raid demonstration, there will be loud noises and smoke. Please bear this in mind when bringing young children or dogs.
